About the team we are recruiting to

The Outdoor Education Service delivers high quality learning and outdoor experiences to the young people of Coventry.  

At present, the offering is delivered through our Plas Dol y Moch site in North Wales.  The centre is run by a high-quality team, including qualified teachers delivering high-quality education through the medium of the outdoors in a residential setting.

In order to protect the long-term viability of the service, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan to expand the scope of the offering the service provides.  This will include expanding the service into Coventry to ensure that young people in the city have access to a range of quality provision.  

What is the job role?

This is a strategically important operational role, one in which the successful candidate will need to realise an ambitious plan to expand the outdoor education provision in Coventry whilst maintaining the advice and guidance training for existing services.

The successful candidate must be able to create and deliver a strategy for growth, as well as ensuring the high-quality provision for advice and guidance currently offered is maintained.

The main areas of delivery are:

  • Provide effective and economically viable outdoor learning sessions within one of Coventry City Council’s recognised venue’s or in school grounds
  • To have an up to date working knowledge of all the Department for Education, statutory responsibilities for ensuring all trips and visits across Coventry meet national guidance levels and H&S legislation.
  • Develop a policy for activity and course provision on behalf of Coventry City Council which is linked to the curriculum by advising and supporting the team in their work liaising with curriculum leaders-in schools developing outdoor learning sessions, the necessary resources and their links to the curriculum.
  • To develop and support the implementation of a strategic plan to increase the range of outdoor learning opportunities for young children in the city.
  • Working with the team, identify additional and appropriate commercial opportunities in the city and at Dol y Moch.
  • Ensuring the residents of Coventry are engaged with the service by engaging with them and building a trusted brand.
  • Work with the Head of Education Entitlement, other council leadership and stakeholders (eg Stakeholders) to ensure the service is delivered in a way that meets the expectations of the council.
  • To lead the service, ensuring optimum performance from the team.

The role will be based in Coventry but will require travel to and some overnight stays at Plas Dol Y Moch in North Wales as and when required.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with a background in leadership, preferably within the outdoor education or outdoor leisure sectors. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience of working in a senior leadership role within the outdoor education or leisure industry.
  • An understanding of the importance of outdoor education for young people.
  • Experience of leadership in a growing business including excellent people management.
  • Experience of working across multi-site leisure operations.
  • Experience of designing and implementing new outdoor education and leisure products.
  • Experience of developing and implementing a strategic business plan.
  • They are financially literate and able to set and be responsible for budgets.
  • Experience of change management.
  • We are looking for someone with QTS status and someone who either has a broad range of technical OAA qualifications, including at least one at an advanced / technical adviser level. Is either  an Accredited Practitioners of the Institute for Outdoor Learning (APIOL) or is willing to work towards this level.

The successful candidate needs to be an enthusiastic, motivated self-starter.
